A Medicare Advantage Plan is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren't paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also offer prescription drug coverage.
What do Medicare Advantage Plans cover?
Medicare Advantage plans cover Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. Original Medicare generally covers hospice care. Plans may include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits, such as dental, vision or hearing. Benefits, provider networks and costs vary by plan and location. You must continue paying your Part B premium; a separate plan premium may also apply. Before receiving a service, check your plan’s coverage, network and prior authorization requirements. You or your provider can ask the plan for an organization determination about whether a service is covered and what you may owe. If you disagree with a coverage or payment decision, you have the right to appeal. Review your Medicare coverage for 2027 Medicare Annual Enrollment runs October 15–December 7, 2026. Changes made during this period generally take effect January 1, 2027.
